Course Overview

We’re thrilled to welcome to the Hub for the very first time Tom McSweeney CSA from McSweeny Newman Casting for a special two session series running online Tuesday  4th and Tuesday 11th July 2024. Tom alongside McSweeny Newman Casting as a company are one of the most prolific and trusted casting businesses in the country. For over 50 years Tom has an impressive career spanning more than five decades, during which he has cast over 100 feature films, mini-series, tele-movies, and over 500 hours of episodic television for markets in the US, UK, Canada, and Australia. In recognition of his outstanding work on the US mini-series ‘The Starter Wife’, Tom received an Emmy nomination from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2007.

The workshop will simulate a real casting environment in terms of feedback and direction, with Tom providing an insider’s perspective on how the industry works and how to best present your abilities. Across the two sessions, he will mentor you, offer feedback, and guide you through two scenes. Prior to each class, you’ll choose a scene from a selection provided to prepare and master for the session. This is the perfect opportunity to showcase your skills and gain insights from one of the most approachable and seasoned Casting Directors in the industry.

Course Outline

During the day Stevie will focus on:

  • Filming scenes, taking direction and playback.
  • Exploring different preparation techniques for casting.
  • Staying present in the room.
  • Improvisation within a scene.
  • Give insider information to help you nail the next casting.

Course Outcomes

In this dual session series, you will learn:

  • How to get out of your head and into your body.
  • How to connect with your scene partner.
  • How to better prepare into a casting.
  • How to feel empowered before and after a casting session.

How To Pay & Instalment Option: The easiest way to pay is by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) using the bank details on the invoice (please quote the invoice number in the transfer information), or by simply clicking the ‘pay online’ link also on the invoice (bank fees apply). You will be email an invoice upon acceptance into the program. Payment is due no later than the due date stated on the invoice, however if you would like to pay in instalments please call or email the office to arrange the dates and amounts you will pay. Please note full payment of the course is due by the time the course finishes. You can start payment instalments at anytime upon receipt of the invoice.

About Tom McSweeney
With over 50 years in the industry as an actor, director, writer/producer and educator, Tom began his work in Casting in 1988 in Los Angeles.  To date, he has cast well over 100 feature film, mini-series and tele-movie projects, as well as over 500 hours of episodic television for the US, UK, Canadian and Australian markets. Tom is a proud member of the Casting Guild of Australia and for the past 28 years, he has been a member of the Casting Society of America (CSA), serving on the Board of Directors prior to his move to Australia in 1998.  Recognized for outstanding achievement by his peers on numerous occasions, Tom has received four Artios Award nominations from the CSA and in 2007 was honoured with an Emmy nomination by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for his work on the US mini-series ‘The Starter Wife’.
