Course Overview

This series will explore the General American accent for American projects. In this course, you will learn key rules for shape, placement, rhythm, melody and key words for assisting quick adjustments. We will also look at the integration of voice and acting work with accent and the importance of working with truth whilst connecting to accent work. Accent work must not only be accurate, it must be a part of the character you are playing.

Course Outline

The series will cover key vowel, consonant and placement shifts for US Accent.
It will also cover key components of learning any accent in order to assist the actor with tools for future learning.
They include;

  • Shape & Placement – finding the key placement for the sound & learning the key shapes for the accent.
  • Rhythm & Melody – learning the patterns in speech for an authentic, integrated sound.
  • Learning by ear – finding authentic sound files and how to use them to assist your development.
  • Understanding scoring – learning about the importance of emphasis, liaison and phrasing for US Accent.
  • Understanding key phonetic symbols for US Accent.
  • Scene work & monologues: applying US accent work to character work.

Course Outcomes

Actors will have confidence in their ability to:

  • Find placement shifts for accent work.
  • Find the shape and manner of vowels and consonants for General American accent.
  • Identify and adjust for unique rhythms for a given text.
  • Take direction whilst in General American accent without losing the accent placement & key shapes.
  • Identify key phonetic symbols for General American accent.
  • Create their own scoring for individual focus point sounds.
  • Deliver a short contemporary monologue in General American accent.

Dates: 4th July – 8th August 2022

Cost: $372 incl GST (10% off for members)

How To Pay & Instalment Option: The easiest way to pay is by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) using the bank details on the invoice (please quote the invoice number in the transfer information), or by simply clicking the ‘pay online’ link also on the invoice (bank fees apply). You will be email an invoice upon acceptance into the program. Payment is due no later than the due date stated on the invoice, however if you would like to pay in instalments please call or email the office to arrange the dates and amounts you will pay. Please note full payment of the course is due by the time the course finishes. You can start payment instalments at anytime upon receipt of the invoice.

About Felicity Jurd  

Felicity Jurd is an established acting & voice coach and has worked as an actress & voice over artist since 1984.

As a voice over artist, she has worked extensively in the UK & Australia across all genres of recording from radio & television commercials, promos, corporate narration, IVR systems and audiobooks. Clients include; BBC4 London, ABC Radio, ABC TV, NOVA FM, Southern Cross Austereo, MTV (Europe), ITV (UK), Channel 5 (UK). She can currently be heard on the “Bring up Respect” commercial campaign and has also voiced commercials for Heinz, Nicabate, Quickbooks and more. She has completed several audiobooks, and is best known for her narration of “You Need to Know” by Nicola Moriarty and “Daughters of Eve” by Nina D. Campbell.

As an actor, she has worked across stage, screen and audio including roles in; The Drover’s Wife, Doctor Doctor, Land of Hope, Mackeroy Uncovered (ABC ME), The Vegemite Tales (West End, London), Chambres (dir: Laurie Foell, Belvoir St), Five Women Wearing the Same Dress (Darlinghurst Theatre, dir: Christopher Houghton), I May Fly (Syd, London, NY). She has recently wrapped work on the feature film, Evicted – A Modern Romance for StoryMill and a new short film, The Pool directed by Erica Long & Cristobal Olguin. She has also appeared in many television commercials in UK, NZ & Australia.

She studied Acting at the Full Time Conservatory of the Atlantic Theater Company (1997 – 1999), atyp (1985 – 1994) and LAMDA (2008). Felicity holds a Bachelor of Arts (English & French) from Macquarie University & holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Felicity is currently working on two international screen productions as a voice coach.
