Course Overview

The HubStudio is thrilled to welcome Shy Magsalin to the studio. Shy has been officially approved by Tadashi Suzuki to teach the Suzuki Method of Actor Training and teaches across various institutions as a result.

In this course, we explore and examine in-depth a highly physical approach to acting and stage presence through the rigour and discipline of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training with Shy Magsalin, director of the Ninefold ensemble and member of the International Suzuki Company of Toga. 

Developed by renowned theatre director Tadashi Suzuki, the Suzuki Method of Actor Training serves to strengthen an actor’s physical and vocal sensibilities, developing a highly articulate body capable of expressing and communicating with power and precision. It comprises of physical exercises that train the actor and address obstacles that arise in performance.

This comprehensive and detailed look at the Suzuki training is designed to have you working at your physical limits, getting you out of your head and into the body and soul of acting.

Course Outline
Shy will guide participants in dissecting and examining foundational Suzuki Method exercises, focusing on; 

  • Deepening bodily awareness, physical specificity and attention to sensory experience.
  • Deepening the connection between the imagination and the body.
  • Clarity, precision and power in physical expression.
  • Exploring the relationship between breath, energy and the body’s centre of gravity.
  • Exploring the notion of “active stillness” or “movement in stillness”.

Course Outcomes

Through this course you will; 
  • Develop an awareness of how the relationship between breath, energy and the body’s centre of gravity can serve the actor in performance
  • Deepen the connection between body and imagination through sensory experiences
  • Apply techniques and philosophies from the training to rehearsal and performance

How To Pay & Instalment Option: The easiest way to pay is by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) using the bank details on the invoice (please quote the invoice number in the transfer information), or by simply clicking the ‘pay online’ link also on the invoice (bank fees apply). You will be email an invoice upon acceptance into the program. Payment is due no later than the due date stated on the invoice, however if you would like to pay in instalments please call or email the office to arrange the dates and amounts you will pay. Please note full payment of the course is due by the time the course finishes. You can start payment instalments at anytime upon receipt of the invoice.

About Shy Magsalin

Shy Magsalin is a director and perfomer. She is the head of the ensemble Ninefold in Sydney and works and trains regularly with the Suzuki Company of Toga (SCOT) in Japan. Shy graduated from UWS with a Bachelor of Performance (Theatremaking) before continuing to study the Suzuki Method of Actor Training with Zen Zen Zo (Brisbane), OzFrank Theatre (Brisbane), SITI Company in New York (2007, 2009) and SCOT in Japan (2008-current). She has directed and performed locally, interstate and internationally.

Projects include ‘The Whistling Man’ (imPACT Ensemble, 2006), ‘The Blue Book’ (International Theatre Ensemble, Sweden 2009), ‘Macbeth: 9 Scenes Rehearsed’ (Sydney, 2014), ‘Room’ (Earthcrosser Company/PACT Vacant Room, 2014), ‘The Architect and the Emperor of Assyria’ (I-SCOT, Japan 2014), ‘Kachi Kachi Yama’ (SCOT, Japan 2016), ‘The Tragedy of Antigone’ (Ninefold/PACT Axis Sydney 2016) and ‘The Blue Bird’ (I-SCOT, Japan 2017, 2019), ‘Greetings from the Edge of the Earth’ (SCOT, Japan 2017), ‘Wyrd: The Season of the Witch’ (Ninefold/PACT 2018),  ‘Sauvage (Wild)’ (BATCH Festival/Griffin Theatre Company).

Shy has been officially approved by Tadashi Suzuki to teach the Suzuki Method of Actor Training and teaches across various institutions such as Actors Centre Australia, NIDA Open, The HubStudio, Riverside Theatres and Sydney Theatre School.
