Course Overview

This comprehensive series will get your U.S Accent to a professional and proficient level. Learn the default placement of the dialect, using a variety of methods you will explore the muscular setting needed to create an embodied Generic American Dialect. Learn a system that allows you to identify sound changes and problem areas with ease and assists with sound substitution. You will revise and expand your phonetic knowledge. Furthermore, you will learn how resonance can assist you to create character detail and give you access to different styles of Generic American. These skills will then be applied to monologues and scenes.

Course Outline

This course is comprised of 5 separate units:

  • Identify the oral posture of the Generic American Accent.
  • Accent Acquisition Techniques.
  • Placement: How the muscles form the accent.
  • Pronunciation: How the words sound.
  • Prosody: Rhythm and Intonation.
  • Practice: Monologue and Scene Work.

Course Outcomes

This practical voice series will help you master a General American accent for the stage and film, directly up skilling you for your next audition or role, and for 2020 Pilot Season.

  • Increase flexibility and dexterity in speech muscles.
  • Explore and develop resonance for accents.
  • Develop authenticity in your accent work.

How To Pay & Instalment Option: The easiest way to pay is by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) using the bank details on the invoice (please quote the invoice number in the transfer information), or by simply clicking the ‘pay online’ link also on the invoice (bank fees apply). You will be email an invoice upon acceptance into the program. Payment is due no later than the due date stated on the invoice, however if you would like to pay in instalments please call or email the office to arrange the dates and amounts you will pay. Please note full payment of the course is due by the time the course finishes. You can start payment instalments at anytime upon receipt of the invoice.

About Linda Nicholls-Gidley

Trained as an actor and a theatre voice/accents and dialects specialist, Linda has worked in the Industry for over 20 years. Theatre Credits include Directing Pramkicker for her company Vox Theatre at The Chippen Street Theatre. This year Linda has just completed coaching on Saturday Night Fever playing at The Lyric Theatre, Russian Transport (Darlinghurst Theatre) , The last 5 Years (Ensemble Theatre), Grounded (National Theatre of Parramatta), The Crucible (Sport for Jove), The Rise and Fall of Little Voice (Darlinghurst Theatre) and Counting and Cracking (Belvoir/Sydney Festival). Other Theatre credits include Love, Maggie Stone, The Humans, Torch Song Trilogy, The Walworth Farce, A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing, DNA, and Home Invasion. Linda has also coached for large mainstage productions such as Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon Arena Spectacular and musicals such as The Bodyguard, Rocky Horror and Dirty Dancing as well as Film (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2, Book Club) and Television (Mary – The Making of a Princess, The Chase Australia)

Recent acting credits include Marge Murray and Judy Shepard in The Laramie Project/ The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later, Polonius/Stage Manager in Håmlet with Ban Shakespeare at Bondi Feast, Susan in One Way Mirror with Subtlenuance, and as various characters for the KXT Storytellers festival, she appeared as ‘Coach’ in the independent feature film Zoe.Misplaced. Linda can be heard talking about the Australian accent on the podcast In A Manner of Speaking and about the voice in general on the podcast Brady’s Hunch. Linda will be seen later this year on Channel 72’s science program for children Get Clever, talking about the voice.
