Course Overview

The HubStudio is thrilled to have such an accomplished WAPPA graduate actor and award-winning director at The HubStudio Perth. Matt’s work has been nominated for multiple awards including PAWA awards, Helpmann Awards and Sydney Theatre Awards, and he from 2015-2019 was the Artistic Director of Barking Gecko theatre company.

For the last twenty years Matt has helped thousands of actors to find their creative flow. Cast members in his shows have won major theatre awards and numerous students have been inspired to give memorable and nuanced performances. This series then is the perfect opportunity to work along side like minded actors in a professional and focused environment.

In this eight-week course participants will work with Matt to explore the finest classical and contemporary texts with rigour and playfulness. Through this process they will learn to make the unique and powerful choices that build memorable performances. Using scenes and monologues from the best classical and contemporary plays, Matt will take actors through a detailed exploration of text, character and physical action. Each session will begin with a dynamic warm up designed to bring the actor’s body, voice and imagination into a playful and centred presence.

Course Outline

Our first two classes will involve a close study of texts as a group, after which participants will prepare scripts to workshop and perform in the room each week. Guided by Stella Adler’s maxim ‘your talent lies in your choices’, these classes will take participants from a close analysis of text to vividly realised performances. Great text demands rigour and creative courage from the actor, but the reward for this is artistic growth and creative flow!

Course Outcomes

In this one day course, you will learn:

  • Build unique and detailed characters from a close study of text
