Course Overview

The perception of a character actor is changing. Instead of playing types, the best character actors play no ‘type’ at all, to disappear into roles completely while at the same time understanding the techniques required to do so, imbuing their performances with something memorable; they are the chameleons in the truest sense of that word.
Throughout this 6 week workshop we will explore and practice the necessary methods of crafting multi layered characters that can be used in the professional industry.

Course Outline

In this course the actor will learn, examine, and practice the strategies to craft complex characters through a combination of techniques and instincts. The class will be broken into components and disciplines consisting of:

  • Text analysis
  • Voice and breath
  • Movement
  • Entry Points
  • Improvisation
  • Personalisation

Course Outcomes

This class is designed for the actor to create a ‘tool kit’ of strategies, exercises, and techniques to break habitual behaviour and craft believable characters for film and theatre:

  • How to break down a script
  • How to find all the clues you need to know about your character in the text
  • Physicalising language to allow your instincts to emerge
  • Learning to trust your intuitive physical impulses
  • A stronger understanding of your body in the space
  • An approach to connecting the voice to the physical
  • Stagecraft discipline
