Course Overview

Ensemble is an ongoing practice (which runs in 6 week blocks), for professional actors who have already trained with Nadia. Two hours of physical and ensemble training to strengthen the muscles required to bring out the best in your work.  This is an extension of the one hour class warm up you would have done with Nadia in her classes. Delving deeper in to work that allows the actor to get more connected to voice, body and breath, follow impulses with confidence, as well as finding freedom in putting your attention outside of yourself.

Called ensemble practice because Nadia is interested in creating a core group of practitioners  with whom she can collaborate with on future film and theatre projects, via a short hand.  An ensemble who have a shared working methodology, a practice from which unique work has the possibility to emerge.

Course Outline

Each week will be a 2 hour intensive practice, from 8-10am.  The actors will be asked to commit to a 6 week block as each round they will be working with particular text or investigating a particular aspect of the practice.

Each week will engage in work that focus on:

  • active relaxation
  • voice/body connection
  • following impulses
  • grounding
  • presence
  • kinesthetic response

We will often be working with text but Ensemble is NOT a scene class.  Its 2 hours of physical and ensemble training to strengthen the muscles required to bring out the best in your work.

Course Outcomes

The individual actor can expect to gain out of their weekly training

  • Increased Confidence: through the physical and breath connection they will discover a growing confidence and grounded quality to their work
  • Depth of connection: through relaxation, the space for a greater emotional capacity or connection to the work will occur
  • Being present: Through the ensemble practice and kinsesthetic response work you will find the ability to follow impulses with clarity and purpose and staying connected to the other will become second nature.
  • Presence: the weekly practice will allow you to walk on to the job or into auditions with the fullness of your own unique presence.

This will hopefully be the ground work for Ensemble theatre and film projects facilitated by Nadia Townsend and supported by The HubStudio.

About Nadia Townsend

Nadia has been working as an actress in Australia and internationally for the last 17 years and more recently has become a much in demand dramaturg for film and television projects.  Nadia first trained with Atlantic Theatre Co in NYC then set up her own theatre company, producing independent theatre in Sydney.  She got her first TV gig on an ABC Ben Gannon production where she met long time mentor Nico Lathouris.  Nico ignited ideas and questions about drama that she has spent most of her adult life trying to answer.

Nadia continues to train at the Roy Hart school of voice in France and with movement improvisor Tony Osborne.  Nadia has trained with US practitioners Ivana Chubbuck, Larry Moss, Ellen Burstyn.  The principles of Practical Aesthetics are still at the base of Nadia’s methodology but she has travelled the world to find practitioners and other practices from dance to marital arts that support and expand her ideas about the craft.
