Nadia Townsend Screen Practice
Level Two Masterclass
A full day intensive screen course – the next step in the Nadia Townsend series.
This course is for anyone who has previously trained with Nadia. A chance to work with like minded colleagues in a way that you already know resonates with you. Nadia is a renowned film and television coach and dramaturge whose process is designed to get actors working at their full potential, not just as actors but as artist and as the unique human beings they are. Actors often walk out of Nadias classes feeling grounded, alive, re-invigorated about their potential within the work, loaded with new tools and techniques to access text as well as stay present with scene partners.
Nadia works with the upmost of integrity and rigour and asks nothing less of her students. This course is for those who have already experienced what Nadia has to offer and is up for a new year re-boot one day intensive.
This is a one day intensive designed to get you out of your head and into your body, an opportunity to tune back in and give yourself a craft pick me up. Delve deeper into the practice of active relaxation, putting your attention on the other person, listening with your whole body, being present, working spontaneously, exercising emotional availability, letting your body react before your brain censors what you are doing.
Using small scenes the participants will be on the floor for the majority of the day with short breaks for debrief and reflection.
“Nadia brings a refreshing new insight to scene study and the development of character through action and behavioural improvisation. She is extremely good at demystifying the process which allows you to make new discoveries in a completely supportive environment.”
Shannon Ashlyn: Wolf Creek 2 | Love Child | Puberty Blues | Devils Dust
“Simply put, signing up for Nadia’s Screen Masterclass was the best thing I’ve done in a long time. Every week, I left the session with a blissful smile, having been consistently challenged as a craftsperson but equally fulfilled as an artist. Nadia is a remarkable practitioner and my work has been profoundly shifted by her inspiring approach to scenes and auditioning alike, her practical knowledge of both the industry and the actor’s craft, as well as her totally awesome sense of humour about it all…! When’s the next one?”
James Fraser: Deadline Gallipoli | The Water Diviner | The Killing Field | Anzac Girls
“Nadia’s approach to acting feels more like an approach to life. She’s armed me with tools to relax, tricks to awaken my senses and habits to increase awareness. The work doesn’t try to produce good acting through correct technique in a moment, but rather facilitates it through a lifestyle of presence and curiosity. Nadia wants us to listen to our bodies and follow visceral instincts to get what we want. When we do, the work comes alive.“
The session will incorporate the practice of the following:
- Active Relaxation
- Engaging in scene dynamics through physical tasks
- Practice of pursuing an objective through improvisation
- Exercising your will and exploring the finer dynamics of being in relationship to the other.
- A chance to asses where you are within your current process and what you want to focus on now.
This series is extraordinary. Nadia gives each actor the skills to act from a place of impulse and intuition bringing freedom and spontaneity, unpredictability and excitement to each actors work.
- Clearer and more useful script analysis
- Tools for deep, active relaxation
- Work authentically, stay alive in scene-work
- Working from impulse
- Greater understanding of centring and source power
- Increased ability to listen and react to your scene partner
- Bringing vitality to your film work, and an aliveness on screen

About Nadia Townsend
Nadia has been working as an actress in Australia and internationally for the last 17 years and more recently has become a much in demand dramaturg for film and television projects. Nadia first trained with Atlantic Theatre Co in NYC then set up her own theatre company, producing independent theatre in Sydney. She got her first TV gig on an ABC Ben Gannon production where she met long time mentor Nico Lathouris. Nico ignited ideas and questions about drama that she has spent most of her adult life trying to answer.
Nadia continues to train at the Roy Hart school of voice in France and with movement improvisor Tony Osborne. Nadia has trained with US practitioners Ivana Chubbuck, Larry Moss, Ellen Burstyn. The principles of Practical Aesthetics are still at the base of Nadia’s methodology but she has travelled the world to find practitioners and other practices from dance to marital arts that support and expand her ideas about the craft.
